Guts’ tale is at the heart of Berserk, although he has recently taken a backseat in the dark fantasy epic. Can he still be referred to as the protagonist?
Berserk is one of the few manga that has perfected the dark fantasy genre like no other. Guts, a warrior, wanders a brutal, brutal world in search of vengeance on Griffith, a former ally turned foe.
Guts meets a diverse cast of individuals along the route, from the valiant young Ishidiro to the apprentice witch Schierke, but the band that accompanies him has recently taken over as the series’ major character. Can Guts still be considered the main protagonist of Berserk, and will we ever see him take the spotlight again?
The Black Swordsman’s Importance To Berserk
Berserk is everything a mature fantasy series might want: savage combat, morally ambiguous characters, a dismal mood, and the most incredible artwork, courtesy of creator Kentaro Miura. Despite Berserk’s proclivity for violence, there is one character who manages to break the story’s unwaveringly grim tone and inject genuine compassion into it. Guts, commonly known as The Black Swordsman, is that character.
Guts has two goals: to repair his beloved companion Casca’s shattered mind and to seek revenge against Griffith, who inflicted her misery. Guts possesses incredible strength and wields an immensely massive sword capable of chopping down demons, named the Dragonslayer. Griffith was a previous friend of Guts, but his ruthless ambition drove him to abandon Guts and betray their united group, The Band of the Falcon, in order to gain tremendous power.
Guts faces tremendous odds, depending on deft swordsmanship and his own battle-hardened prowess to achieve his objectives. Along the way, he meets a diverse group of characters who accompany Guts on his adventure.
Gut’s New Party
The fairy Puck is the first of Guts’ companions. Puck serves as a source of comic relief in the series, and he also has a number of magical skills, including the ability to make fairy dust from his wings, which may cure wounds.
Casca follows suit, but in her childish state, she’s twice as fragile and requires more protection than Guts can provide. Farnese satisfies this requirement. Farneses’ faith was shaken when she realized the people she had loved were devils. She was the daughter of the Vandimion dynasty of nobility and had a vicious habit of burning heretics. She becomes Casca’s protector and is inspired by her charge’s helpless state.
Isidro, Serpico, and the witch Schierke, in addition to Guts, are the party’s main offensive forces. Isidro’s diminutive stature and youth make him arrogant and irresponsible, yet his ingenuity has gotten the group out of numerous tight situations. Serpico, a Farnese ally, has a gracefulness and quickness that adds lethality to his already lethal swordplay. While still an apprentice witch, Schierke possesses the power to generate massive fire tornadoes, possess animals, and keep Guts in control when he activates his berserker armor. You can already see how Guts would start to blend in with the crowd.
How Guts’ Role In The Series Has Changed
Because Guts is the main character of Berserk, the audience has had the opportunity to firsthand feel the anguish and suffering that he has suffered. Many fans may connect to his resolve to defy the odds and come out on top while fighting to the death. Guts has no natural magical skills; aside from his berserker armor and his loyal comrades, he relies only on his own power and wits to overcome any challenges he encounters. He isn’t immortal, and he isn’t like the “Gary Stu” heroes who populate many fantasy series: his body is riddled with wounds, a monument to his tenacity.
Gut is, without a question, the major attraction because of his predilection for surviving by the skin of his teeth in a world where humans are ripped apart. However, due to the series’ proclivity for taking long breaks, readers are seeing less and less of him. When they do, his progress is pushed to the side while other members of his party receive greater attention.
So… Is Guts Still The Main Character Of Berserk?
One of the key characters is still Guts. Gut’s role as the principal protagonist is now shared by Casca, Farnese, Serpico, Isidro, and Schierke, thanks to the addition of Casca, Farnese, Serpico, Isidro, and Schierke. This could be seen as Miura’s technique of fleshing out his fantasy world via the eyes of other characters. We now have several perspectives instead of just one.
As Berserk’s finale approaches, the Black Swordsman will most likely reclaim the limelight in subsequent chapters, at which point he and Griffith may finally put a stop to their long-running feud.
